Plastic bags clogging drains and sudden downpours turning roads into rivers have thrust Bahrain’s rainwater troubles into sharp focus.

The Ministry of Works is rolling out a range of measures, from upgraded drainage networks to emergency response teams, to tackle the havoc wreaked by heavy rain.

The ministry is addressing longstanding issues with drainage systems, often choked by dirt, farm waste, and discarded rubbish such as plastic bags and paper.
