Kuala Lumpur: Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing is scheduled to visit Malaysia on Wednesday and Thursday, officials said, as both countries work to resolve the long-standing issue of Myanmar migrants and refugees.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that he, along with the foreign and home ministers, will discuss the refugee issue during Hlaing's visit. The negotiations come after Malaysia recently returned roughly 1,500 Myanmar nationals. The visit aims to address Myanmar's admission of more nationals in Malaysia and provide assurances about their treatment upon return.

Malaysia has reported that approximately 5,000 Myanmar nationals have consented to repatriate. The visit marks a significant diplomatic engagement between Malaysia and Hlaing's administration, which has endured regional criticism since Myanmar's military coup in 2021.
