New Delhi: Harmanpreet Kaur, India's women's cricket skipper, has stepped down as captain in all three forms, bringing an end to her long tenure with the national side. She announced the decision on Tuesday, October 6, stating that it was a difficult decision based on years of memories, feelings, and sacrifice.
Kaur's resignation came a day after the BCCI held a review meeting in Guwahati to assess the team's recent performance and future plans. She had captained India in five Tests, 51 ODIs, and 155 T20Is, beginning with the T20Is in 2016 and becoming full-time captain in the lengthier forms in 2022.
Her captaincy created some of the most significant achievements in Indian women's cricket. Under Kaur's leadership, India won their first Women's ODI World Cup title in 2025 and gold at the 2026 Asian Games, adding to her track record of continental success.
Despite stepping down as captain, Kaur will continue to represent India as a player. In her farewell statement, she stated that she was leaving the leadership position with serenity and trust in the team's future, and that while her captaincy was over, her journey with Indian cricket will continue.
