Manama : A Gulf national accused of attacking an on-duty police officer has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years imprisonment. He was also fined BD500 for his crime.

The 40-year-old defendant is said to have been nabbed after officers discovered that he was drunk while they were checking his identity at a police check-point.

However, while being transported to the police station, he reportedly strangled one of the officers sitting beside him on the backseat of the police vehicle.

The victim immediately lost consciousness after the defendant hit him. The police patrol stopped and the defendant was eventually brought under control.

“I came to Bahrain by my car, and I stopped it in Isa Town. I asked someone to drive me to the hotel, where I drank beer,” the defendant said during the interroagtion.

“I left and asked another man to drive me to my car. I stayed inside the vehicle for some time and then felt that I could drive it by myself. So I started the engine and accidentally took a turn near the causeway, where the police set up a checkpoint,” he added.

The 40-year-old was charged with assaulting an on-duty police officer and driving under the influence of alcohol.
