The Indian Embassy in Bahrain has received information that an Indian national has died at sea, the Embassy Counselor Ram Singh last night. The deceased has been identified as Antony Anish Andrews.

The 21-year-old fisherman is hailing from Kanyakumari in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Anish Andrews, a bachelor, had been working in a fishing boat in Qatar for the last few years.

“Yesterday 5 pm the Embassy received a call stating that an Indian man has died. The Incident happened at sea. We don’t have further information,” Ram Singh said, adding that once the embassy gets detailed information, the process of repatriating the body will be initiated.

His body is kept in the King HAMAD University Hospital (KHUH) in Muharraq. Bahrain's Interior ministry is yet to confirm the report.

Confirming the death of Anish Andrews, Kanyakumari district collector Sajjansingh. R. Chavan said: "We are yet to know where and when it happened. But the fishing boat and other fishermen have been was rescued by the Bahraini coast guard," he said.

Meanwhile, general secretary of the South Asian Fishermen Federation Fr Churchill said, “Anish and four others, also hailing from Kanyakumari district, were fishing in the Persian Gulf when the Iranian pirates opened fire on them killing him.”

“Fearing for their lives, the fishermen fled to the Bahraini waters seeking help from the Bahraini coast guard. They were escorted to Bahrain and the dead body of Anish was kept at a hospital in that country,” Churchill added.
