Manama : A Bahraini man was killed in a horrific traffic accident in Sudan on Wednesday.

The deceased is Ahmed Essam, 23, who travelled from Bahrain to the East African nation through Saudi Arabia by car last week.

Essam, worked for the Bahrain Defence Force and was apparently on his annual leave.

A close colleague spoke to DT News on basis of anonymity, informing that “the deceased had just returned from a military mission within the Operation Restoring Hope in Yemen”.

“He just bought a new car and travelled to Sudan to visit some relatives and friends. His parents were initially objecting that he travels by land, but he insisted,” the colleague told.

He added, “He travelled from Bahrain through King Fahad Causeway reaching Mecca, where he performed the Umrah pilgrimage, then he stopped at Jeddah port on the western coasts of Saudi Arabia. He then took a ferry to Port Sudan City on the eastern side of Sudan. The accident occurred on a freeway from Port Sudan to the Capital Khartoum. He was involved in a head-on collision with a truck while overtaking another vehicle. He was announced dead on the spot.”

The deceased was buried in Sudan. He was survived by his parents, brother and sister.
