Bahrain aims to double the number of trees from 1.8 million to nearly 3.6 million by 2035. This came as a top Bahraini official presented Bahrain’s strategic afforestation plan during the eleventh session of the World Urban Forum (WUF11) in Poland.

The session was under the patronage of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT) from June 26 to June 30. Joint Municipal Services Assistant Undersecretary, Shawqiya Humaidan, explained that the strategy aims for “the expansion of afforestation projects in various streets and intersections, and municipal and government projects.”

Bahrain’s move follows commitments to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26). Shawqiya Humaidan explained that the afforestation strategy included large evergreen trees for their suitability to the climatic conditions of the Kingdom and their low water consumption.
