A woman was sentenced yesterday by the Lower Criminal Court to a non-suspended one year in jail after being convicted of offending Islam and denigrating its rituals, Chief Prosecutor Nasser Ibrahim Al Sheeb announced.

The Public Prosecution received a notification from the Anti-cyber Crime Directorate about detecting an account on the social networking website, Twitter, in which its owner posted tweets offending Islam and disdaining its rituals.

The Public Prosecution launched an investigation into the incident and interrogated the woman who admitted to the charges levelled at her. It ordered to remand her in custody pending investigation and refer her to the court which issued its afore-mentioned verdict.
