London: A lady died while trying to cross the English Channel in a small migrant boat from France to Britain, underlining the ongoing risks of the dangerous path that thousands of people use in order to get to the UK. After the ship entered UK waters, British officials stopped it and discovered the woman unconscious. She received emergency medical care, but was declared dead.

The crammed boat had not made a distress call during the journey, according to British and French officials. Support groups highlighted the tragedy as another terrible reminder of the risks faced by migrants undertaking the trek, and authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances behind the woman's death.

The English Channel is one of the world's busiest maritime channels, yet migrants continue to attempt the dangerous trip in inflatable boats operated by people smugglers. The latest tragedy comes amid ongoing cooperation between the United Kingdom and France to reduce unlawful crossings and disrupt trafficking groups.
