Washington DC: A major diplomatic and commercial milestone was reached on Thursday as the first direct flight between the United States and Venezuela in seven years prepared for takeoff.

The American Airlines flight, scheduled to depart from Miami for Caracas, serves as a significant indicator of a ‘thaw’ in relations following the removal of former leader Nicolas Maduro by U.S. forces earlier this year.

The resumption of air travel is expected to facilitate business growth in Venezuela, a nation holding the world’s largest proven gas reserves.

While the U.S. State Department still advises travelers to reconsider visiting due to crime, it recently lifted its blanket ‘do-not-travel’ warning. This shift comes despite high global oil prices sparked by recent military conflicts in the Middle East.
