Zamfara: Authorities reported 17 people were killed when armed groups assaulted an illicit mining site and a nearby community in Zamfara state, northwestern Nigeria.

The assailants, riding motorcycles, reportedly killed five miners outside Bindin hamlet before entering the town and killing 12 soldiers in a shootout.

Local officials claimed the incident was carried out in reprisal for miners killing a bandit who had threatened them.

The attack illustrates armed gangs' ongoing brutality in northwestern Nigeria, where rural villages and informal mining operations are regularly attacked.
