University of Bahrain students develop an environment-friendly car

A group of Mechanical Engineering students from the University of Bahrain claim that they developed an environment friendly hydrogen powered vehicle with additional improvements in structure, design, and control system.

Mechanical Engineering student, Aisha Alaynati explained that the hydrogen fuel powered car produces water vapour immediately after a chemical reaction occurs, which makes it a highly environment- friendly and safest method to use.

She pointed out the need to limit the damage to the environment resulting from increased production of smoke by vehicles and provide means of comfort to drivers by reducing financial costs.

She said, “We designed the construction of car body and fixation to the frame, car suspension. We also evaluated weight, centre of mass, moment of inertia and analysed the performance of the handling, braking and ride characteristics.”

Her colleague, Hassan Merza confirmed that the vehicle project was compared with ISO standards. He said that, “The ride characteristics of the suspension system are compared to the ISO standards of human tolerances to vertical vibrations. The results of the vertical vibration analysis gave good values within the ISO allowed limits of human ride qualities, which means the driver may spend up to over than 8 continuous hours to start on feeling any type of discomfort.”

The students completed the project during the academic year using materials including carbon, fibre and aluminium.

The carbon fibre material was selected in the design and manufacturing of the vehicle body with the aim to use lightweight and high strength materials in constructing the vehicle.

The students had to face various challenges during the production including time constraints, making repairs for the project and the lack of budget for it.

The project was done under the under the supervision of Dr. Mostafa Habib. The students also expressed appreciation for Dr. Bader Al Mannai, Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department, the mechanical engineering workshop technicians and UoB council for the financial supports.
