LONDON: Astronomers have made a thrilling breakthrough, identifying 27 potential ‘circumbinary’ planets worlds that orbit two stars instead of one. In a binary star system, two stars are locked in a gravitational dance, circling a shared center of mass.

While most known planets orbit a single star like our Sun, these candidates suggest that "Tatooine-style" systems are much more common than previously thought.

By analyzing timing variations in 1,590 eclipsing binary systems, researchers found 36 anomalies, leading to these 27 specific candidates. Located between 650 and 18,000 light-years from Earth, these objects still require confirmation, as some might be small stars or brown dwarfs.

Regardless, the discovery significantly expands our understanding of how planets form in the most complex and crowded corners of our galaxy.
