A team of doctorsat Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) yesterday successfully removed a 4-centimeter metal piece that was stuck in a labourer’s brain in a worksite accident recently. The doctors confirmed that the condition of the patient was stable and he could resume work normally after a few days.
Neurosurgery Consultant at SMC Dr. Nabeel Hameed, who supervised the surgery, said that the metal piece broke off a grinder and pierced through the man’s skull.
According to the doctor, the victim was cutting marble pieces using the grinder without wearing any safety gears like helmet and special glasses used while operating such machinery.
Due to extensive heat and overload of work, the grinder broke and the 4 centimeter-long and 2 centimeter wide metal piece perforated into the man’s face near his right eye, stucking in the middle of his brain.
“Initially, his condition was stable when he was brought here. But, it quickly deteriorated, putting his life in danger,” Dr. Hameed said.
A team, including Dr. Hameed, Dr. Bassam Al Arady and Dr. Mina Michael was immediately formed to conduct the delicate surgery. Dr. Hameed said that the timely medical intervention had saved the man’s life without damaging his brain.
Dr. Al Arady said that quick medical intervention reflected on the patient’s condition after the surgery, as he could normally function. “He didn’t complain of any neurological damage or paralysis, as such injuries could be lethal or lead to permanent damage or total disability,” he explained.
