Gift of Reading

The Winter Concerts held by the British School of Bahrain (BSB) Junior and Senior schools this year have raised a grand total of BD469.725 for UWS (United World Schools) - The Gift of Reading.

This money will help UWS provide new libraries for their schools in Cambodia, Nepal and Myanmar and bring books and the gift of reading to many children who may never have seen a book before. Just GBP80 will help stock one entire library, so our donation will go a long way to stock 12 complete libraries.

Some facts about the Gift of Reading:

Reading and life chances: the facts

δ A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past age five

δ A child whose mother can read is 50% more likely to be immunized, and twice as likely to attend school

δ 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty if all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills – equivalent to a 12% cut in world poverty
