2.45 million trees planted as Kingdom strengthens local production and food security
Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak affirmed that Bahrain continues its efforts to support and develop the agricultural sector, strengthen local production and ensure its sustainability as part of the Kingdom’s comprehensive development process under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
He also highlighted the support and attention extended by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Consultative Council of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development.
Speaking on Arab Agriculture Day, observed annually today, Al Mubarak said the ministry continues to implement initiatives and projects aimed at developing the agricultural sector, empowering Bahraini farmers, strengthening the presence of local produce and expanding opportunities for agricultural investment, while supporting sustainable production and national food security.
He said Bahrain’s afforestation plan has made tangible progress as part of efforts to enhance environmental sustainability and achieve carbon neutrality targets.
Around 2.45 million trees have been planted across the Kingdom, representing 68 per cent of the strategic target of planting 3.6 million trees by 2035.
Al Mubarak added that the “Bahrain Mangroves” initiative, launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, is one of the country’s leading environmental projects aimed at protecting the marine environment, enhancing biodiversity and supporting Bahrain’s efforts to address climate change.
The initiative has achieved 139 per cent of its target, with more than 2.23 million mangrove seedlings planted.
Turning to support for farmers and the marketing of national produce, Al Mubarak said the Bahraini Farmers’ Market is one of the national initiatives supporting locally grown agricultural products.
He said its latest edition attracted more than 220,000 visitors over 12 weeks, while more than 250 tonnes of locally grown agricultural produce were marketed during the event.
Preparations are now under way for the 14th edition of the market.
