PARIS: A French man went on trial on Monday accused of torturing and raping a former partner, who has courageously chosen to speak publicly about her horrific ordeal.

The 51-year-old defendant faces a public trial in the southern city of Digne-les-Bains after the victim explicitly waived her right to anonymity. She has explicitly chosen to follow in the footsteps of Gisele Pelicot, the prominent French figure who successfully advocated for an open trial after her husband drugged and recruited strangers to sexually abuse her.

By rejecting secrecy, the victim stated her desire to ensure that any shame associated with the crimes remains entirely on the aggressor rather than the target.

The landmark prosecution details a pattern of severe domestic abuse, physical captivity, and sexual assault. Prosecutors aim to shed light on systemic intimate partner violence, utilizing the public nature of the proceedings to push for broader legal protections across France.
