Dublin: Forensic examinations started on human remains found at a former mother and child home in Tuam, County Galway, bringing in a new phase of the investigation into one of Ireland's most horrifying historical burial sites.

Infant remains discovered during excavations at the previous institution are now being processed at a modern forensic facility in Tuam. So far, investigators found the remains of 99 infants, the majority of whom were found in coffins. The remains will be thoroughly forensically examined, including efforts to ascertain their age, gender, and identity.

DNA samples from 62 persons who believe they are related to the children buried at the site have already been taken. Investigators aim to identify the children by comparing DNA retrieved from their bodies to family samples.

From 1925 to 1961, the St Mary's Mother and Baby Institution occupied the site. Historian Catherine Corless earlier discovered data indicating that approximately 800 newborns and children died at the institution but had no accompanying burial records. The finding of human remains at the site prompted a thorough investigation and forensic excavation.

The dig is expected to continue as officials seek to recover, evaluate, and, if possible, identify the remains.
