The High Criminal Court has sentenced a Bangladeshi man to life after he was found guilty of smuggling marijuana.

The 20-year-old was arrested at the Bahrain International Airport, stashing the illicit drugs in slippers.

He landed in Bangladesh to Bahrain flight, according to court files. The defendant’s slippers were looking abnormal at the time of his arrival, prompting a customs officer to send for extensive inspection, according to court files.

“His walk wasn’t usual as well as his slippers,” the officer told prosecutors, stating that the seized marijuana was weighing over one kilogram. The defendant earlier denied he was aware that the slippers were containing drugs. He stated that his cousin had given them to him before two months of his flight.
