MOSCOW: A drone strike targeted two facilities at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant overnight, killing one worker while leaving core nuclear safety intact.

State nuclear director Alexei Likhachev confirmed Ukrainian drones struck a laboratory building and a radioactive waste processing facility at the southeastern site.

The attack claimed the life of a delivery driver transporting food for facility employees. Russian state nuclear agency Rosatom reported that despite the direct physical damage, radiation levels remain uncompromised, while Ukrainian officials have not publicly commented on the allegations.

The incident highlights ongoing operational vulnerabilities at Europe’s largest nuclear station.

Recent shelling has already damaged external power supply lines, leaving the six-reactor plant dependent on emergency diesel generators to keep nuclear fuel cool.

Russian Foreign Ministry officials accused Western nations of enabling the strikes through failure to issue public condemnations, as International Atomic Energy Agency monitors remain stationed on-site, attempting to secure local ceasefires for critical grid repairs.
