Clampdown on dilapidated buildings, violating street vendors

The Capital Municipality had identified 11 dilapidated buildings in the first three months of this year and is taking the necessary administrative procedures ahead of destroying them, in coordination with the relevant authorities.

This is according to Capital Municipality director-general Shawqiya Humaidan. The move is in accordance with the provisions of the Law 35/2001, allowing municipalities to destroy buildings that pose a threat to people’s safety and property.

Meanwhile, Humaidan indicated that a total of 468 stalls of violating street vendors had been removed in the first quarter of this year. She said that the Municipality has intensified its monitoring and inspection visits during Ramadan to address the violating vendors across markets and commercial outlets, as part of its efforts to protect the health and safety of consumers.

She noted that the number of violators is lower than that of the same period in 2019 as a result of the precautionary measures taken by the Government Executive Committee to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19), including the closure of commercial outlets.

She said that the efforts to control and follow-up on street vendors had been intensified in cooperation with the Interior Ministry and the Labour Market Regulatory Authority
