Differences between the ending of the original version and the version played in Chinese cinemas have been noted in Minions: The Rise of Gru, according to viewers of the film. The adorable villain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) and his life as a thief in 1970s San Francisco are the subjects of the fifth instalment of the Despicable Me series. Gru learns from and schemes with his mentor Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin).
Wild Knuckles fakes his own death in the international release of the film, allowing Gru and Knuckles to escape punishment for their crimes.

However, Weibo users claim that the version aired to Chinese viewers includes an additional statement stating that Wild Knuckles was ultimately apprehended by law enforcement and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

His time in prison turns out to be beneficial since he changes his life, rediscover his "passion of acting," and starts a community theatre group for the other prisoners. According to the alleged Chinese ending, Gru "returned to his family" and said that "fathering his three kids is his best success." Viewers have made fun of the movie's alternate ending, with some likening it to a PowerPoint presentation. This is only one of several reports of media suppression in the nation. It was claimed earlier this year that Chinese censors altered Fight Club's conclusion to favour the ruling class.
