Manama : A local band has won the first prize in the Youth Festival for Arab and Traditional Music held at the Egyptian city of Cairo.

The band comprising young musicians Mohammed Asiri, Youssef Al Jabri, Zakaria Ali, Rashid Abdullah and Jihad Ahmed won the prestigeous prize.

They rendered a collection of songs and musical compositions on the stage of the Egyptian Youth and Sports Theatre.

The band belted out traditional Bahraini numbers before a jury of renowned Arab musicians such as Hani Mohni, Hani Shnouda and Dr. Ezz-Eldeen Taha.

The second and third places went to the Algerian and Egyptian bands, respectively. The festival was organised by the Egyptian Youth and Sports in cooperation with the League of Arab States. The festival concluded yesterday.

Organised for the first time, the music festival was aimed at raising awareness against extremism and terrorism, and to spread human values and peace among the youth.
