Geneva, Switzerland: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed relief that a major tragedy was averted on an Israel-bound flight after passengers successfully overpowered a pilot attempting to crash the jet.

Speaking through spokesman Stephane Dujarric following Wednesday's mid-air altercation, Guterres voiced deep concern over the terrifying ordeal aboard the Dubai-Tel Aviv service.

The UN chief strongly condemned any action that places civilian lives and the safety of civil aviation at risk.

He offered gratitude to the authorities concerned for swiftly ensuring the safety of all passengers.

Guterres also commended officials for promptly conducting an investigation into the incident.
