Damascus: Seven people were killed and four others injured when gunmen opened fire on a bus in central Syria on Wednesday, according to state media.

The attack took place in Homs province near Misyaf Bridge. The injured were taken to hospitals for treatment.

The passengers included engineers and workers from a private company as well as an employee of the Syrian Electricity Company. The identity of those behind the attack remains unknown.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the victims were members of the Alawite minority, which has faced several attacks in recent years.

The incident comes amid continuing security challenges in Syria following the fall of Bashar Assad's government in late 2024.
