Dubai, United Arab Emirates: A tanker caught fire on Thursday after being struck by an ‘unknown projectile’ while transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to British maritime officials.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre confirmed that all crew members were reported safe following the strike, though the full extent of damage to the vessel remains unknown.

The maritime agency did not specify which flag the tanker was flying, its planned route, or whether the vessel was carrying crude oil or liquefied natural gas.

The strategic waterway remains at the heart of regional conflict, with Tehran blocking commercial shipping and firing on vessels it accuses of unauthorized crossings.

In response, Washington maintains a counterblockade of Iranian ports to prevent oil exports, as commercial ships continue to face regular targeting in the strait.
