Seoul, South Korea, said Thursday that it has not decided if or how much it will invest in the Alaska LNG project, despite US President Donald Trump's announcement that Seoul will commit more than $50 billion to the project.
The South Korean Trade Ministry said it is still reviewing the project's commercial viability and the necessary domestic legal procedures. It said discussions on the project will begin, but neither participation nor investment amounts have been confirmed.
Trump had announced the Alaska LNG venture as part of a larger $200 billion South Korean investment package in US energy projects. The deal also includes a gas-fired power facility in Texas for around $22.3 billion and plans for eight nuclear reactors.
The proposed Alaska LNG project would include a 1,300-kilometre pipeline transporting natural gas from Alaska's North Slope to a southern export terminal, with LNG destined mostly for Asian markets.
