Tokyo: A sunny weekend brought an end to 37 straight days of rain in Tokyo, marking the capital's longest continuous rainfall since 1886, according to Japan's weather agency.

The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that the continuous downpours lasted from August 27 through October 2, capping the capital's longest stretch of rainy days since records began in 1886.

During this period, Tokyo was soaked by 696.5 millimeters of rainfall since the beginning of September, amounting to more than three times its normal level.

Though Tokyo's rainy season normally occurs in June, the city suffered regular summer downpours that triggered severe flooding across the wider metropolitan area.

Weather officials noted that atmospheric moisture was fueled by fossil fuel emissions and climate change, alongside global weather patterns shaped by El Niño.
