Tiny Nocturnal ‘Coffee Frog’ Discovered In Costa Rica

Costa Rica: Scientists have discovered a brand-new endemic species of nocturnal tree frog, affectionately nicknamed the ‘coffee frog,’ thriving inside coffee plantations across Costa Rica's central Pacific region.

Formally known as the spring frog, the tiny dark green-spotted amphibian measures less than four centimeters long and was identified in San Lorenzo de Tarrazu by scientific researchers.

Experts from the University of Costa Rica observed that male frogs feature unique translucent throats that inflate while making short, high-pitched calls at night. The creatures use coffee shrubs for shade and moisture while hunting small insects rather than consuming coffee berries.

However, researchers warn that heavy pesticide use on coffee plantations poses a grave threat to the fragile species. Airborne farm chemicals easily seep into soil and nearby water systems, edangering the delicate aquatic environments where tadpoles develop.
