Kinshasa: More than 900 suspected Ebola cases have been identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as surveillance efforts scale up across the conflict-hit nation. World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed the figures, noting that the tally includes 101 strictly validated cases.

The fast-moving outbreak has already claimed 204 lives across three provinces in the central African country. Driven by the highly volatile Bundibugyo strain, medical teams face an uphill battle as there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments available to halt transmission.

The crisis has crossed international borders, with Uganda confirming five total cases and its first death.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has placed ten neighboring countries on high alert, citing heavy regional migration and security issues as dangerous catalysts for the spread.
