Polls open in UK local elections set to punish Starmer’s Labour

LONDON: Polling stations opened across Scotland, England, and Wales at 7:00 am on Thursday for the UK local elections. These ballots represent the most significant electoral challenge for Prime Minister Keir Starmer since his Labour Party's landslide general election victory in July 2024.

The elections are expected to place considerable pressure on the current administration amid a shifting political landscape. Observers suggest the results may highlight a growing trend toward both hard-right and left-wing populist movements.

After 14 years of Conservative governance ended last year, these local contests serve as a critical barometer for Starmer's leadership and the public's current sentiment toward the Labour government.
