Most of these accidents, according to the report, were caused by motorists jumping red signals, over speeding as well as speaking on mobile phones while driving.

The Directorate said there occurred 932 road accidents in the Kingdom between January and October 2017, claiming 42 lives and leaving another 890 people injured. 377 people sustained serious injuries.

In 2016, the Kingdom recorded a total of 1,408 accidents, leading to the death of 47 people, while 1,300 were injured.

As per law 23 of 2014, tougher punishments are in force in the Kingdom to prevent traffic violations, besides introducing a points system in February 2016.
