Monk arrested for raping underage girl

A monk aged 38 has been remanded in Sri Lanka for raping a schoolgirl inside a ritual room on the pretext of doing a ritual to increase her memory power.

Police said the monk was arrested at a temple while doing religious rituals.

The victim was an 18-year-old Grade 13 schoolgirl of a Colombo convent. She suffered from weak memory power and her parents had brought her to the monk to do a ritual to improve her retentive power.

The suspect had told the parents to bring the daughter at twilight to the temple where he would be doing rituals in a room into which only the patient is allowed to enter.

In the complaint lodged with the police, the parents said only their daughter was taken into the room where he had raped her. After she came out, she told what happened to her parents.

Medical reports had proved that the victim had been raped.
