Man gets jail for swindling illiterate creditor

A man was sentenced to two months in prison in the UAE after he was found guilty of cheating his creditor, taking advantage of his illiteracy.

Police arrested the man after he borrowed Dh57,700 from another man and gave him a cheque with lower amount, knowing that he cannot read.

A Court of First Instance sentenced the defendant to two months in prison, prompting him to appeal. He appealed again with the Federal Supreme Court (FSC) after the court of appeals sentenced him to two months in jail.

Newspapers said the FSC turned down the defendant’s appeal and upheld that sentence on charges of swindling his creditor.
