Install video cameras on car dashboards

The Federal Traffic Council of the UAE has made a recommendation that car owners be allowed to install video cameras on the front dashboards of their vehicles, according to an ‘Emarat Al Youm’ report.

This came at a council meeting held on Thursday (January 28), with the use of cameras on front dashboards being cited as a means of recording what is happening on the road, especially in case of accidents.

The council stressed that this will help to identify the party causing a traffic accident, especially in run over cases, where some people throw themselves in front of vehicles to blackmail drivers.

Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Chairman of the Federal Traffic Council and Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police for Operations, cited a case where the same person was run over twice in one month, in the same location.

“Having a camera would reveal what happened,” he said.

He pointed out that the FTC had agreed that the use of such cameras would not violate privacy, as the driver is recording what is happening on the road.

Major-General Al Zafin said that the FTC has also recommended not tinting windshields in order to strengthen security and safety on the road.
