India on Thursday emphasized that its energy policy focuses on the interests of its citizens, following remarks by US President Donald Trump that New Delhi had committed to halting Russian oil imports.

The Indian government did not confirm or deny any shift in its approach toward Russian oil.

“It has been our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario,” said Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal. “Our import policies are guided entirely by this objective.”
