Vienna: The UN nuclear watchdog has expressed alarm over a spike in power losses at a Ukrainian nuclear power station, warning that recurrent disruptions could pose further challenges to nuclear safety amid the ongoing conflict.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been closely watching the situation at Ukraine's nuclear facilities, where consistent external electrical sources are required to cool reactors and maintain vital safety systems.

The IAEA has frequently stated that nuclear plants must have consistent access to power, even when reactors are not operational, because electricity is required to keep vital equipment running.

The conflict continues to put pressure on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which has led to the ongoing fears. In order to stop a decrease in safety conditions, the IAEA has demanded actions to safeguard nuclear plants and provide continuous power supply.
