EU leaders have agreed to speed up the relocation of the migrants arriving in Italy and Greece, in the EU summit in Brussels.

The chairman of the summit Donald Tusk said 40,000 migrants would be relocated to other EU states over the next two years.

There has been no agreement on a proposed quota system at the summit.

Also, Greece’s debt crisis was also on the summit's agenda. The country remained deadlocked with its international creditors after talks on Thursday.

Mr Tusk had earlier urged EU member states to help with this situation as thousands of migrants cross the Mediterranean seeking a better life in Europe.

According to the border agency Frontex , 153,000 migrants have tried to enter the European Union this year - a 149% rise compared with last year.

"Now we don't need empty declarations on solidarity, only deeds and numbers," he said.

The migrant crisis has been high on the agenda for the EU summit, that opened on Thursday.
