Over 700 tonnes or 253 truckloads of used furniture were removed from houses in the Southern Municipality as part of the “Call for your furniture” initiative.

Southern Municipal workers visited over 250 homes since the launch of the initiative in June last year. The Urbasier Cleaning Company is working with the municipality as part of the initiative, launched by the Southern Region Municipality, in cooperation with the Municipal Council.

Old items of furniture are dismantled and transported via trucks designed by the Urbasier Cleaning Company. Workers part of the initiative ensures full compliance with the COVID-19 protocols, said a municipal official.

Southern officials said the initiative aims at eliminating the practice of throwing away unused furniture in open spaces, streets or near garbage containers

. “The irresponsible behaviour is also troubling cleaning company workers, as their trucks are unable to serve the purpose,” the official added. The municipality donates usable furniture to charities and is recycling non-usable ones. Citizens can request pickups seven days a week on the number 80070000.

The service, municipal officials said, is currently is limited to the elderly, people of determination and special cases. Furniture is dismantled and removed on Sundays and Thursdays.

In the next phase, the municipality will extend the services to all citizens residing in the southern region.

The second phase will also see the service moving from two days a week to five days a week with two rounds a day. Southern municipality officials said the project has contributed to reducing the disposal of old furniture in random locations.
