Washington: A deadly heatwave is sweeping across much of the United States, threatening to interrupt the country's Fourth of July celebrations as millions gather for parades, barbecues, concerts, and fireworks.
Authorities have issued broad heat advisories and excessive heat warnings, encouraging people to restrict outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and seek out air-conditioned locations during the warmest hours of the day. Several cities have established cooling centres, and organisers of several holiday events have changed timetables or increased emergency medical support to protect attendees.
Millions of people are expected to travel by road and air during one of the biggest travel weekends of the year, which coincides with the excessive temperatures. Long-term exposure to the heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, especially in children, the elderly, and people with underlying illnesses, according to health officials.
As reported by weather forecasters, the intense heat is predicted to last into the holiday weekend in a number of areas, raising the possibility of wildfires and further taxing power systems as demand for air conditioning rises.
