Los Angeles: Iranian supporters have discovered a strange ally at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with many Mexican fans choosing Iran as their ‘second team’ in a gesture of unity and mutual love of football.
The support comes as many Iranian fans are unable to travel to the United States due to visa restrictions and political issues, resulting in fewer supporters in stadiums than expected. Mexican fans, who have turned out in great numbers for the occasion, have joined in by waving Iranian flags, wearing team colours, and cheering alongside the Iranian contingent.
Several Mexican supporters informed the media that they felt a connection to Iran's team and wanted to make sure the players received the support they deserved. According to many, the gesture was a celebration of football's capacity to unite people outside of politics.
Videos of Mexican supporters cheering for Iran and referring to the squad as ‘our second team’ have gone popular on social media, drawing attention to the show of solidarity.
Iran, which is in Group G, is still in the running for a spot in the knockout stage, and Mexican fans are likely to keep supporting the team in its remaining World Cup games.
