DRESS TO IMPRESS

Meet Ashwathy Shyamkumar, an artist with a passion for fashion and design. The freelance designer, illustrator and stylist, graduated from fashion school with the Best Designer award and even showcased at Bahrain Fashion Week 2010.

DT News has collaborated with the popular fashionista to bring her exciting personal style notes, product talk and glimpses into what’s hot and trendy right now in the world of vogue!

There’s a new rule when it comes to dressing up for formal events. While floor sweeping gowns and neat sheath dresses are still quite popular, it’s also very safe and boring and can also make you look rather outdated.

The new code is all about breaking the norms and dressing up according to your personality. There are a variety of styles that can be tapped into when it comes to occasion wear. From embroidered top – skirt combos to bold printed dresses and flattering silhouettes, these statement styles will ensure you stand out from the crowd.

Here are a few ‘must have’ separates in your wardrobe to step out in style.

1. A bright printed sheath dress not only shouts out trendy, but also ensures you make heads turn. Keep in mind to pick a dark colour that’s apt for the occasion and not too loud.

2. A backless number is perfect for summer weddings. Learn to show skin in moderation so ensure the dress covers the entire bodice and is only open at the back.

3. Skirts in luxurious fabrics like silk or satin and interesting embroidery adds texture and is great when paired with solid coloured blouses.

4. If you’re not the one to wear dresses and want a more androgynous look, opt for sleek jumpsuits or pant suits instead. Satin and sequinned fabrics will amplify the style and make it more party- appropriate.
