The Muharraq Municipal Council will discuss the challenges and needs of Muharraq Souq next Monday as members review a recommendation focused on strengthening the historic market. For many residents, the souq is not merely a commercial space. It is a living archive of memory.

Shopkeepers open doors once opened by their fathers, and customers still greet familiar faces behind wooden counters.

The recommendation highlights infrastructure improvements, service needs and regulatory considerations aimed at supporting traders and enhancing the overall environment.

Behind these formal references lies a deeper question: how to preserve the economic pulse of a place that carries generations of history. Revitalising the souq is not simply about maintenance.

It is about protecting livelihoods, preserving heritage and ensuring that future generations continue to walk its narrow paths with the same sense of belonging.
