Turkish comedian sentenced to 19 months for insulting Erdogan
Deniz Goktas convicted over remarks against Turkey's president and religious values, but released pending appeal
Istanbul, Turkey: A Turkish court on Monday sentenced comedian Deniz Goktas to more than 19 months in prison for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and 'insulting religious values'.
The 32-year-old was convicted by an Istanbul court but ordered to remain free while his case goes through the appeals process.
Goktas was acquitted of a separate charge of praising crime and criminals.
Under Turkish law, the sentence does not become final until it is reviewed by an appeals court.
