Syria arrests four Daesh leaders over planned attacks
Several other members of the cell were detained as security forces seized explosives, weapons and ammunition.
Damascus : Syrian security forces have arrested four leaders and several other members of a Daesh cell accused of planning attacks in different parts of the country.
The cell was involved in kidnappings, planting explosives and assassinations, according to Syria's internal security forces. The four leaders were arrested in Raqqa, while other members were detained in Aleppo, Idlib and Homs.
Security forces said the group was preparing attacks aimed at threatening security and stability in the region. Explosives, weapons and ammunition were seized during the operation.
Authorities described the arrests as a pre-emptive operation and said investigations were continuing.
Syria's new authorities, which came to power after Bashar Assad was ousted in 2024, have faced repeated security threats from Daesh. The government joined a US-led coalition against the group last year.
Daesh lost its territorial control in Syria in 2019, but its remaining fighters continue to operate mainly in the country's desert areas and have carried out attacks, particularly against security forces.
Syrian authorities have also blamed Daesh for bomb attacks in July during a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron and said those responsible had been arrested.
