Five earthquakes hit southern Turkey, no damage reported
Tremors were also felt in northern Syria, nearly 150km from the area devastated by the 2023 earthquakes
Istanbul: Five shallow earthquakes struck southern Turkey on Saturday, with tremors also felt in parts of northern Syria. No injuries or damage were reported.
Turkey's disaster management agency AFAD said four of the earthquakes occurred in Adana province's Saimbeyli district, while another struck Sumbas district further south.
The strongest tremor measured 5.2 magnitude and was recorded in Sumbas at about 2.43pm. The other four quakes ranged between 4.3 and 4.9 magnitude and occurred later in the afternoon and evening.
AFAD said there was 'no adverse situation' following the earthquakes.
Syria's national earthquake centre also confirmed that all five tremors were felt in parts of northern Syria, without reporting casualties or damage.
The earthquakes occurred around 150km from the area hit by two devastating earthquakes in February 2023. The disaster killed at least 53,000 people in Turkey and about 6,000 in Syria.
Turkey is located on several major geological fault lines and has experienced a number of powerful and destructive earthquakes.
