Bahrain’s women’s national football team yesterday finalised their roster of 23 players for their upcoming qualifying matches for the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

The team is captained by veteran midfielder Yasmine Fayez, and is coached by Bahraini tactician Khalid Al Harban. The rest of the squad includes Alia Jumaa Al Mudhaki, Manar Ebrahim, Marwa Zayed, Hoda Ali Salman, Khuloud Saleh Abdullah, Hessa Riyadh Al Essa, Rose Fayez, Amira Bader Siwar, Iman Rashid Al Khatal, Fatima Hamad Al Nusuf, Fatima Abdulhameed Issa, Rawan Nabeel Alali, Wesal Ahmed Al Yasi, Dana Bassem, Farah Jehad Khaled, Lilia Javed Sabkar, Zahra Nizar Ali, Sara Mohammed Aliwi, Hana Ahmed Hafez, Sama Amjad Qassem, Manayer Ahmed and Shaikha Al Anood Al Khalifa. Bahrain have just two matches to play in qualification Group A, which kicked off last night with Chinese Taipei taking on Laos at the Khalifa Sports City stadium in Isa Town.

Chinese Taipei won 4-0, giving them a rousing start. The Bahrainis first go against Laos on Thursday and then against Chinese-Taipei on Sunday.

The nationals are hoping to finish as group winners to book their ticket to the Women’s Asian Cup finals, which will be held next year in India. There are a total of 24 teams vying for a place in the competition. They have been divided into eight groups for qualifying.

All eight group winners at the end of a single round-robin will book their place. The qualification groups are or have been held in five different locations, including Bahrain (Group A), Tajikistan (Groups B and C), Kyrgyzstan (Group D), Uzbekistan (Groups E, F and G) and Palestine (Group H). Already qualified as group winners are Vietnam from Group B, Indonesia from Group C, South Korea from Group E, the Philippines from Group F, Iran from Group G and Thailand from Group H. Japan, Australia, China and hosts India have automatic berths and are not competing in the qualification competition.
