New Unit To Tackle Environmental Crimes

Bahrain has established a specialised unit to investigate crimes affecting the environment and public health across the Kingdom. Attorney General Dr Ali bin Fudhel Al Buainain issued Decision No. 52 of 2026 to establish the Environmental and Public Health Crimes Unit as part of efforts to strengthen specialised investigations into these cases. The unit will investigate reports involving environmental crimes and offences affecting natural resources, wildlife, marine life, beaches and coastlines, groundwater and surface water, sewage and public cleanliness. It will also handle cases involving public health and other offences covered by relevant environmental laws. The unit will follow up cases before the courts and review court judgments in coordination with the Appeal Prosecution. It will also prepare regular statistics and reports on the cases it handles and monitor new methods used to commit such crimes. The unit will also propose measures and possible legal changes to support national strategies and efforts to combat environmental and public health crimes. It will coordinate with relevant authorities to improve investigation methods and evidence gathering, strengthening legal procedures and the prosecution of suspected offenders in accordance with the law. Prosecutor Hummam Adel Bousubai has been appointed head of the unit, while Prosecutor Hassan Abbas Al Haddad will serve as his deputy.
