WHO Sets Three-Month Goal to Reverse Ebola Spread in DR Congo

Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) intends to reverse the spread of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo within three months, but warns that the outbreak is fast intensifying.

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, has killed over 2,000 people and infected over 4,300 in five provinces. WHO states that strengthening contact tracing is a top objective, with the goal of increasing follow-up rates from 80% to 95%.

However, the response confronts significant hurdles, such as violence, restricted healthcare access, shortages, and misinformation. The virus presently has no licensed vaccine or treatment in broad use, but vaccine candidates are being tested in clinical studies.
