Skopje: North Macedonia has recorded its eighth death from West Nile virus, with 58 cases reported as the mosquito-borne disease spreads across parts of Europe.

All eight people who died were men aged between 62 and 83 and had other health problems.

The virus usually causes mild, flu-like symptoms, but severe infections can lead to high fever, tremors, meningitis, coma and encephalitis, a potentially fatal inflammation of the brain.

The European Union’s health agency has reported more than 1,000 locally acquired cases across 15 European countries this year, highlighting a wider rise in infections.
